ClampOn DSP Well Collision Detector

Clamp-on ultrasonic sensors on existing wells that warn when a new drill string gets too close.
  • Supplied across Indonesia
  • Technical support & sizing
  • Delivery to site, onshore & offshore

Drilling a new well among existing ones leaves very little room for error. ClampOn DSP well collision detection listens to the casings of nearby wells and warns your team when the drill string gets too close.

Directional drilling keeps growing, and new wells often go into crowded slots. PT Saka Nusa Persada supplies the ClampOn DSP Well Collision Detector in Indonesia as a ClampOn distributor. For most projects, however, ClampOn provides it as a supervised rental package. You can also read more at ClampOn.

How Well Collision Detection Works

First, non-invasive ultrasonic sensors sit topside on the existing wells closest to the new well. They continuously digitize the ultrasound that the drill string generates and that travels along the casing of the existing well. When the signal level rises significantly, the driller halts and the team analyzes the data. Afterwards, the drill string can be diverted, or drilling can resume with confidence.

Goals and Benefits

  • Prevent collisions between the drill bit and existing well casings during directional drilling.
  • Early warning, so engineers know how close the drill string is to existing wells.
  • Safer, faster drilling, because you avoid downtime caused by collisions.
  • Milling confirmation, for example when cutting through casing.
  • Low-risk investment, with minimal equipment and personnel on your side.

Installation and Rental Set-Up

The sensors mount with clamping bands and need no hot-work permit or production shutdown. Moreover, they are intrinsically safe, so they have minimal impact on daily platform operations. A typical rental set-up includes 6 to 12 sensors, cables and a power supply, plus a computer with software, and qualified ClampOn personnel monitor it 24/7 while drilling.
